The 2005 annual CAERS meeting and call for abstracts 

  • Dates and location - March 18 and 19, 2005 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Detailed starting times and maps to meeting site will be emailed and posted on the web by mid-February. (For general trip planning purposes we expect the meeting to start around 9AM on the 18th and end no later than mid afternoon on the 19th.) The local sponsor is the UCSB Marine Sciences Institute. John Largier (UC Davis) and Andy Brooks (UC Santa Barbara) are co-program chairs. 
  • Call for abstracts - The abstract deadline is February 15, 2005. Abstracts must be submitted by email in MS word or plaintext to John Largier (jllargier@ucdavis.edu) with a cc to Randy Brown at brown.randall@comcast.net. The abstract should be no more than 250 words and consist of a title, authors (presenting author indicated by *), and affiliations and addresses of all authors. We encourage poster and oral presentations. Please indicate which one you prefer. 
  • Sessions - We expect two invited (monitoring and sediment) sessions and a contributed papers session. 
  • Student awards - We will give monetary awards for best student poster and oral presentation. 
  • Registration fees - We will provide the information in a couple weeks, along with a request for pre-registration. To help with meeting planning, please register early! 
  • Special attractions - Dr. Jerry Schubel of the Long Beach Aquarium will give a keynote talk. There will be a reception/poster session after the business meeting. 
  • Housing - There is no on-campus housing available. We will soon be posting the names, locations and phone numbers for some local motels located close to the meeting site. 

At this meeting we will be asking for reactions to the idea of CAERS sponsoring a special meeting on some aspect of estuarine and near-coastal ecology of interest to resources managers and scientists. 

Call for nominations 

We seek nominations for President-elect and secretarytreasurer. If you are interested in running for either of these offices (or know someone who is), please let me know (brown.randall@ comcast.net) by March 1 and include a brief CV. The CVs will be posted and voting will be by email. The results will be announced at the 2005 business meeting. If you nominate someone, please make sure the person is interested in running for the office. If you have any questions about the responsibilities of these two positions, please contact me (Randy Brown) by email or phone - 916.961.5449. The positions are for two years beginning October 2005. 

The changing of the guard will officially occur at this fall's international ERF conference in Norfolk. Wim Kimmerer will move into the president slot, and I will stay on the Executive Board as past president.
