ERF Welcomes Recent PhDs To Join Registry
A new program sponsored by the Estuarine Research Federation will benefit
recent PhDs engaged in issues at the land-water interface. The Dissertations
Symposium for the Advancement of Coastal, Estuarine and Great Lakes Science
(DIACES) will be a clearinghouse for information on current research topics
and the gradates who are undertaking that research.
Funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA's)
Coastal Oceans Program, DIACES will promote understanding of coastal and
estuarine environments-including human impacts-and foster sound research,
policy and management practices. The program is an extension of the ongoing
DIALOG program (http://aslo.org/phd.html),
which focuses on research in aquatic science.
Online Dissertation Registry
All qualified recent graduates are invited to register their Ph.D. dissertations
with the online DIALOG/DIACES Dissertation Registry (http://aslo.org/phd.html).
Once registered online, graduates will be included on an e-mail list to
foster cross-institutional communication and information distribution.
Dissertation abstracts will be collected and posted online in a searchable
format, providing a concise overview of the field and highlighting individual
accomplishment. The registry is hosted by the American Society of Limnology
and Oceanography (ASLO) and will be linked to cosponsoring society
web sites.
In addition to being a wonderful form of individual recognition, the
registry provides a concise overview of emerging research from around
the world. Once registered, graduates will receive symposium updates,
job announcements and other information of interest for career development
Eligibility and Funding
DIACES is open to PhDs completed between January 1, 2000, and March 31,
2002, and whose work in biology, chemistry, mathematics/modeling or physics
is relevant to coastal, estuarine or Great Lake environments. Selection
will favor those who plan to pursue careers dedicated to improving our
understanding or management of these systems.
Qualified individuals from all nations are eligible for participation
in DIACES. Forty participants will be selected, based on the application
materials submitted. Travel subsidies are provided through grants from
the supporting agencies: National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA), NOAA, Office of Naval Research (ONR)
and the European Commission.
Sponsors
DIACES is sponsored by ERF and Whitman College and is funded by NOAA.
DIALOG is sponsored by ASLO and Whitman College. ERF is a cosponsor of
the DIALOG program, along with the Ecological Society of America (ESA),
the International Society of Limnology (SIL), the Society of Canadian
Limnologists (SCL) and the Oceanographic Society (TOS).
The DIACES symposium will be held from October 28 to November 2, 2002,
at the CopaMarina Conference Center in Puerto Rico. Abstract registration
forms, symposium application instructions and PhD dissertation registry
can be accessed at http://aslo.org/phd.html.For more information about
DIACES, contact C. Susan Weiler, Ph.D.: telephone, 509-527-5948; e-mail,
