Long-term connections wanted!

Membership Matters

Dear Federation Members:

Actions of individual members and our members' dues build the Federation. They produce the journal, our advocacy for research and education and our lively conferences. The dues you pay do not create the Federation; they give you access to the knowledge, connections and relevance that members previously built. Your research and management work continue to

build the wealth of knowledge in our field. Your dues and actions sustain the investment and assure that our support will be here to nurture future generations of scientists.

The Federation is greater than the sum of its individual scientists. Our collective knowledge is a fusion of your individual contributions. The Federation absorbs and multiplies individual contributions like a mangrove tree soaks up photons of sunlight and particles of water and from these becomes a grander, living thing \u2013 greater than the sum of its individual inputs.

Membership in the Federation connects you to a large, important long-term project.

The Federation connects ideas and people over time and space. We sustain and enhance connections through our conferences, by educating and mentoring, through the regional Affiliate Societies, by producing excellent publications and doing advocacy for estuarine and coastal research. Contributions of individual members sustain the progress.

The Federation promotes you. The Federation celebrates the knowledge generated by its members and seeks to use their insights to catapult us to even clearer understandings of our favorite ecosystems. Together Federation members create long-term value for themselves, for science and for humanity as a whole.

What we value:

Federation members believe that understanding, protecting and restoring coastal environments are good and important activities. We devote our lives to this. We believe that increasing and sharing our understanding of these magnificent environments makes the world a better place. We believe that more information is better. We are data avid and we seek to turn information into wisdom.

Coastal and estuarine research is built and sustained by commitment to both individual and collective work. Individual work builds the discipline. Federation members know that there is a vital role in the world for our collective work. In this time of glorifying mindless entertainment, the rewards of a lifetime spent creating and sustaining subtle and complicated scientific knowledge and community often goes unrecognized.

The Federation's conferences, publications and mentoring of young scientists offer opportunities to enrich our individual knowledge and to place our work into perspective within the larger body of scientific wisdom. Through long-term membership in our scientific society we offer you an opportunity and invite you to exercise your right to be a contributing member of a vital and noble enterprise.

Federation members place a high value on initiative and discipline. We honor our members' visions and accomplishments. We believe that our collective wisdom contributes to and magnifies the accomplishments of our individual members.

We thank all of you active members whose distinguished work and good ideas create our discipline and our scientific society. We thank all who stay connected and honor all who recognize that their membership sustains a unique, complex and enriching community of good work and great fellowship.

We offer you a vibrant and welcoming community that multiplies and enriches your individual accomplishments. Sustaining the Federation comes down to your individual decision to join or renew.

The Federation brings you good science and good times. Please stay involved \u2013 your participation makes it all possible.

Your humble ERFant,
   Joy A. Bartholomew
