Once again the Women’s Aquatic Network will sponsor a luncheon at the 2003 ERF meeting in Seattle, exploring the careers and career paths of successful women in the aquatic sciences. The luncheon will take place at noon on Tuesday, September 16, at the Seattle Convention Center.

Two Seattle-area scientists will speak at the luncheon about their career experiences and choices. The speakers will be Dr. Usha Varanasi, Director of the Northwest Fisheries Science Center of the National Marine Fisheries Service, and Dr. Gisèle Muller-Parker, Professor of Biology and Assistant Director of the Shannon Point Marine Center of Western Washington University.

Dr. Varanasi is the first woman to become the Director of one of NMFS’s Science Centers. She has been the Director of the NWFSC since 1994, where she had been a toxicologist since 1975 with a particular interest in how marine organisms accumulate and process chemical pollutants.

Dr. Muller-Parker came to Western Washington University in 1990 from the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory of the University of Maryland. In addition to studying algal symbiosis and coral reef ecology, she teaches a wide variety of classes and serves as an advisor for the production of marine science-related films for the BBC.

In addition to the formal program, ample time will be allotted for networking and socializing. Students will find the luncheon to be an excellent opportunity to meet others in the field and will surely be inspired by the speakers. Both men and women are invited to attend. The luncheon is open by advance registration to all ERF 2003 attendees, but make sure to register early — previous WAN luncheons have sold out.

WAN brings together women and men with interests in marine science and marine and aquatic policy and promotes the role of women in those fields. Membership is open to all who are interested in these goals. To learn more, go to WAN’s website at www.womensaquatic.net.
