AERS' Spring Meeting
AERS' Spring Meeting was hosted by Old Dominion University (ODU), and
held in the historic (though recently renovated) Hotel James Madison.
Dan Dauer of ODU did a wonderful job with local arrangements. In traditional
AERS fashion the meeting was held Thursday evening (April 5) through Saturday
noon (April 7). The hotel is located in an urban renewal area of Norfolk
and surrounded by eclectic eateries and watering holes (mainstays of any
successful AERS outing).
Oral presentations were held through out the day on Friday (April 6th)
and resumed on Saturday morning. The caliber of papers, especially student
papers, was remarkable. Friday afternoon after the business meeting, a
poster session and social hour preceded our banquet. AERS elected Steven
Fuller of Mary Washington College as the President-elect. Steve will serve
a year as President-elect, followed by two years as President, and a final
year as Past-President. Also elected was Judith M. Stribling of Salisbury
State University. She serves a two-year stint as Secretary. Two additional
students were named to the board of directors. Leila J. Hamdan, from George
Mason University will serve as the Ph.D. Student Representative. Bruce
W. Vogt of VIMS will serve on the board as the Master's level Student
Representative. Tim Morris stepped down as chair of the Membership Committee
but will remain on the committee; Chris Swarth has begun an indefinite
sentence as chair of the Membership Committee.
Student Award Winners
AERS can award up to four student awards for presentations during our
meetings, provided the presentations are worthy of merit. This Spring
AERS Meeting gave the judging panel a difficult task due to the truly
high quality papers presented by AERS student-members.
The Best Poster Presentation was awarded to L.B. Carrier who along with
co-authors C.E. Tanner, C.L. Boice, J.J. Dohne and E.L. Gleason, gave
the poster entitled, "Examination of the Long-Term Recovery of an
Oiled Saltmarsh Following Restoration by Sediment Stripping and Spartina
alterniflora Propagation." Ms. Carrier's feat is all the more impressive
in that she is an undergraduate at St. Mary's College of Maryland.
C.L. Dryden won the Award for Best Presentation by a Ph.D. Candidate.
Co-authors, J.A. Consolvo, A.S. Gordon, and J.R. Donat were part of the
team presenting, "Copper-Complexing Ligand Production by Microorganisms
in the Elizabeth River, Virginia." Dryden is a student at Old Dominion
University.
The Award for Best Presentation by a Master's Level Student went to G.T
French, from VIMS, who along with co-author K.A. Moore presented, "Single
and Interactive Effects of Light and Salinity Stress on the Growth, Reproduction,
and Photosynthetic Capabilities of Vallisneria americana."
The Award for Best Presentation by an Undergraduate Student went to J.T
Greenige from the University of the District of Columbia. His co-authors
included J.T. Perkins, and Harriett Phelps. His presentation was entitled,
"PCB Congeners and Chlordane in Anacostia River Sediments and Asiatic
Clams (Corbicula fluminea): Possible Effects of Recent Dredging."
No AERS Fall Meeting
AERS will forgo a fall meeting this year in order to meet in conjunction
with ERF at its biennial meeting. The spring of 2002 will see AERS meeting
in Lewes, Delaware. The actual dates of that meeting have yet to be determined
(the first or second weekend in April), pending the findings of the local
arrangements committee, however, a large meeting is anticipated. Check
out the AERS web site (http://www.vims.edu/aers/) for further details
as they become available.
