ERF Announces New Educator Award
The William A. Niering Outstanding Educator Award
Although education is not specifically mentioned as a purpose of the Estuarine Research Federation in the constitution and bylaws, education is crucial to achieving the research, communication, and advisory objectives of the Federation. To recognize the central role that education plays in achieving the objectives of ERF, the Governing Board has established a new award named for a leader in estuarine education, The William A. Niering Outstanding Educator Award. Bill Niering was very adept at motivating individuals to learn and in the process expand their knowledge of estuaries and the coastal zone. The first William A. Niering Outstanding Educator Award will be presented at the 16th biennial ERF conference in St. Pete Beach, Florida, November 4-8, 2001 during the plenary session. The award will consist of a cash prize of $1000 and expenses to attend the biennial meeting.
Candidates could include individuals who have played a significant role in the education at any level, from primary school to the graduate level, both within and outside the classroom or education of the general public through outreach activities. Awardees will be selected on the basis teaching excellence and professional contributions. The awardee should have a demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire students, use innovative teaching techniques, and provide opportunities for field and laboratory experience. He or she must also be a positive role model and, as a result, encourage individuals to continue careers in estuarine science, education, management, policy, or restoration/conservation. Additionally the awardee must have made significant professional contributions to science education programs either at their institution, within their professional organizations, or in the local community.
