About GERS
Congratulations to Michael Poirrier, University of New Orleans, for winning the position of President-Elect in the recent election. GERS first electronic election was made possible by a revision to the bylaws made during ERF 2005 in Norfolk, VA. The current GERS board consists of Paul Montagna (President), Chris Onuf (Past-President), Michael Poirrier (President-Elect), and Greg Stunz (Treasurer). All officers serve a two-year term.
Plans continue to evolve for the next GERS meeting to be held in Corpus Christi, Texas on November 2-4. A hotel should be selected soon, and a request for topics will follow in spring.
We will be trying a new meeting format by holding biennial GERS meetings in even years to complement the biennial ERF conference held in odd years. However, GERS is sponsoring student travel awards at local conferences this winter and spring. The awards are to attend the GERS conference in Corpus Christi. In spring 2007, the awards will be to travel to the ERF conference in Providence.
Two local meetings are being held this winter and spring. The Central Gulf Graduate Student Symposium was held at Dauphin Island, AL on February 3-5, 2006 and the South Texas Bay and Estuary Meeting will be held April 20 - 21, 2006 in Port Aransas, TX.
