BAD RIVER BAND OF LAKE SUPERIOR TRIBE OF CHIPPEWA INDIANS POSITION: Wetlands Specialist Position Responsibilities: The Wetland Specialist will be responsible for facilitating the Wetland Program, project goals and objectives, including conducting an inventory of and mapping all wetlands within the exterior boundaries of the Bad River Reservation; will develop and expand current wetland programs; will integrate and coordinate wetland planning and policy with other environmental and land use processes; will monitor future status and trends in relation to wetlands. The Wetlands Specialist will assist Water Resources and other programs with various projects as needed. This position is subject to funding on an annual basis. The Wetlands Specialist must have experience with data analysis, and with operating a wide variety of analytical field equipment to collect background data (GPS/GIS, Soils, Flood Plain Survey). The incumbent will develop the Bad River wetland protection strategy to include wetland evaluation methodology and list wetlands requiring field inspection and screening strategies for identifying wetlands which do not provide high quality habitat; will coordinate a wetland nutrient project with Water Resources Program which requires regular sampling within the reservation for basic water quality parameters and macro invertebrates, as well as detailed wetland vegetation surveys; will be in charge of projects to evaluate wild rice productivity within the Bad River/Kakagon Sloughs complex; will be involved in aquatic invasive species control and management; wetland regulatory issues and delineations; and will be involved in the development and implementation of a wetland mitigation plan for the Bad River Tribe. The Wetlands Specialist will prioritize wetlands for designation as spiritual, cultural, economic and environmental areas according to Tribal needs; will provide technical assistance in the development and implementation of the IRMP; participate in training, and Tribal, local and regional wetlands work groups; will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Natural Resources Director. The Wetlands Specialist will be responsible for submitting the reports required by the Tribe, Federal, state, and local funding agencies. Physical Requirements: Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Must be willing to travel on occasion to meetings, conferences, and/or trainings. Must be physically able to perform all job duties including field work, walking, standing; bending, stooping, and lifting up to 25 lbs and/or carrying loads for short distances required. Must be able to swim, operate field equipment such as canoes, motorized boats, and ATV's safely. Position Qualifications: B.S. degree in Biology, Wetland Management, Environmental Sciences, with an emphasis in Aquatic Sciences preferred, or B.S. in related field. M.S. in Wetland Management or other Water Resources Management field preferred. Minimum of 2 years experience and/or background in wetland ecology, water quality and chemistry, plant biology or management required. Must possess knowledge of wetland ecology and nutrient dynamics within a variety of different wetland types across a range of environmental gradients, wetland vegetation with ability to identify wetland plants in a field setting, wetland macro invertebrate sampling and identification, wetland hydrology, water chemistry and wetland soils. Must be self-motivated, trustworthy, dependable, and willing to work long hours occasionally to meet deadlines. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have previous demonstrated experience in grant writing, report writing, and managing budgets. Familiarity and experience with tribal communities and/or Native American issues is preferred. Must possess valid driver's license and meet eligibility requirements for coverage under the Tribe's Auto Insurance Policy. Subject to background security checks.
