Marine Biologist Lab Technician
JHT, a government contractor, is hiring a Marine Biological Lab Technician to support NOAA's Center for Coastal Fisheries and Habitat Research (CCFHR) in Beaufort, NC. The Ecosystem Life History Investigation group provides critical life history information for stock assessment models to build sustainable fisheries. Most of the laboratory research involves studies on age and growth of reef fish species. Additional activities include processing fish for biological and life history attributes, collection of samples from the field, sample sorting, and data management.
Key duties/responsibilities include:
- Extraction of animal tissue, marine algae, seawater and other biological material
- Process fish to obtain biological samples.
- Assist in the processing of fish otoliths for age and growth studies of reef fish.
- Analyze samples to determine fish ages.
- Assist with statistical data analysis, report writing, and give presentations.
- Receive, sort, and verify biological data from fishery samples collected by several environmental agencies.
Requirements:
- Requires B.S. degree in Biology, Fisheries, Ecology, or Marine Science fields (or Associates degree with 5 years related experience)
- Have working knowledge of fish identification and fish anatomy.
- Familiar with general laboratory safety protocols.
- Experience with Microsoft software, statistical software such as SAS or R, and data base management.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Experience sectioning otoliths desired but not required.
- Ability to write reports is desirable.
- Organizational skills and teamwork ethic.
- Previous laboratory experience is highly desirable.
- Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment and travel 2-4 times annually.
