SOUTH FLORIDA WATER MANAGEMENT DISTRICT, West Palm Beach, Florida

The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) is a regional agency of the state of Florida, and is charged with managing and protecting water resources of the region by balancing and improving water quality, flood control, natural systems and water supply. SFWMD's boundaries extend from central Florida to Lake Okeechobee, and from coast to coast, from Fort Myers to Fort Pierce, south through the sprawling Everglades to the Florida Keys and Florida Bay.

The Coastal Ecosystems Division at the South Florida Water Management District seeks a quantitative Estuarine Ecologist with expertise in estuarine water quality, especially nutrient cycling. Individuals whose expertise emphasizes any of the following are encouraged to apply.

1) the biogeochemistry of nutrient cycling within and between the water column and sediments, 2) interactions between nutrients and plants, including phytoplankton, macroalgae or submerged aquatic angiosperms, or 3) ecosystem level nutrient budgets and cycles. Major duties include 1) managing projects and conducting applied research on estuarine water quality, 2) interacting with engineers, modelers, and other scientists to help solve complex coastal resource management problems, and 3) establishing and maintaining communications with internal and external customers regarding coastal research results and science needs. The successful candidate should have knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of coastal ecosystems related to water quality, the ability to conduct applied research, and skills to effectively communicate with people both verbally and in writing. Other desirable skills include experiences in statistical analyses of water quality data, facilities with GIS, and collection of water quality data using Insitu electronic devices. MS in Marine/Estuarine Ecology, Environmental Sciences or a related discipline is required (Ph.D. preferred) with at least six (6) years of qualifying experience in estuarine ecology and water quality. Experience in subtropical estuarine systems is a plus. Valid Florida Driver's License required.
