Postdoctoral Researcher
We are seeking a 12-18 month post-doc to participate in field studies, data analyses, manuscript preparation, and grant coordination for a recently funded National Fish and Wildlife Foundation project to develop and test a site-selection model for locating intertidal oyster reef restoration projects. The position will be housed in the Department of Marine Science at Coastal Carolina University (CCU) and jointly supervised by Dr. Keith Walters, CCU, and Dr. Loren Coen at the Marine Resources Research Institute (MRRI), SC Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). Work includes (1) identifying physical site characteristics that contribute to oyster reef restoration success; (2) incorporating site characteristics and reef success measures into a model to enable managers and restoration practitioners to select effectively new sites for successful restoration projects; (3) construction of a series of small to large reefs using DNR planting programs and volunteer labor at sites across SC identified by the model.
CCU (http://www.coastal.edu) is located near Conway just inland from Myrtle Beach, SC. The Department of Marine Science (http://kingfish.coastal.edu/marine/) supports one of the largest undergrad marine science programs on the East Coast. The Department's faculty is multidisciplinary with biological (5), chemical (4), geological (4), and physical marine scientists (2). Faculty also are involved in the recent Coastal Marine & Wetlands Study MS Program (http://www.coastal.edu/science/coastalstudies/).
Nearby field sites include the undeveloped Waites Island near the NC-SC boarder and the North Inlet-Winyah Bay NEERS site and Baruch Marine Lab near Georgetown, SC.
The SCDNR MRRI (http://www.dnr.sc.gov/marine/mrri/mrri.htm) is located at the Ft. Johnson Marine Science Center on James Island across the harbor from downtown Charleston, SC. Over 400 marine/estuarine scientists/resource managers/policy analysts and staff work at Ft. Johnson. The Center also includes facilities for the College of Charleston's Marine Biology Graduate Program (http://www.cofc.edu/~grice/), NOAA's NOS and CCEHBR Lab (http://www.chbr.noaa.gov/), the Hollings Marine Lab (http://www.hml.noaa.gov/), NIST (http://www.hml.noaa.gov/hmlpartners/nist.html), and the Marine Biomedicine Program of the Medical College at USC (http://www.musc.edu/mbes/home.htm). The MRRI houses the Shellfish Research Section with a current staff >10 working on diverse topics ranging from shellfish diseases to community restoration.
Qualifications/Benefits: Applicants should hold a PhD in marine science or related discipline at the time of hiring, with a strong background in ecology and field studies. Experience with statistics (e.g., SAS, SPSS) and relational databases (e.g., Access) is necessary. Strong organizational skills and an ability to handle large, diverse data sets are essential. Extensive field-work on intertidal oyster reefs throughout South Carolina will be required including supervising student and staff researchers and working in a team environment. The ability to transport and operate small boats is preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential. Starting salary is $36,000 for 12 months with state benefits; the possibility of an additional 6 mo. of salary is dependent on funding.
