Nominations
Sought for the Federation's Scientific Awards
Three awards will be presented at the ERF 2001 conference in
St. Pete Beach -the Cronin and the Odum Awards and the new William
A. Niering Award. The ERF Nominations committee is actively seeking
nominations for all three awards.
The Cronin Award - Early Achievement
The Cronin Award is named for Dr. L.Eugene Cronin, Sr. the first
president of ERF and a significant contributor to estuarine science
and our organization. This award recognizes the significant accomplishments
of an estuarine scientist who is in the early stages of his/her
career development. The recipient will have shown great promise
with work carried out during the first six years past the PhD.
Past recipients of the Cronin award are Samantha Joye and Bradley
Eyre.
2001 Award: Dr. Jaye Ellen Cable, Louisiana
State University
The Odum Award - Lifetime Achievement
The Odum Award is named for the three outstanding ecological scientists
in the Odum family: Dr. Howard T. Odum; Dr Eugene P. Odum and
Dr. William H. Odum III. This award recognizes the lifetime achievements
of an outstanding estuarine scientist. It honors an individual
whose record of sustained accomplishments has made important contributions
to our understanding of estuaries and coastal ecosystems.
Donald Pritchard and John Teal are the former recipients of the
Odum Award.
2001 Award: Dr. Larry Pomeroy, of University
of Georgia
The William A. Niering Outstanding Educator Award
To recognize the central role that education plays in achieving
the objectives of our society, last year the Federation's Governing
Board established a new award named for a leader in estuarine
education, Dr. William A. Niering. The Board decided that the
criteria for this award would include individuals who have played
significant roles in education at any level ---from primary school
to the graduate level, inside or out of the classroom, or education
of the general public through outreach activities.
2001 Award: Dr.
Joy Zedler, University of Wisconsin
To Make a Nomination
Nominations should take the form of a one to two page letter describing
the candidate's qualifications and a résumé. Multiple
endorsements of nominees are welcome, but selections will not
be based on "popularity." Estuarine and coastal scientists
from around the world are eligible and nominees are not required
to be members of the Federation.
In addition to being presented with an award at the plenary session
of the upcoming Federation conference, each winner will receive
a $1,000 award and will be the guest of the Federation during
the conference.
