4th AMS Conference on Coastal Atmospheric and Oceanic Prediction and Processes Will Join the ERF 2001 Biennial Conference

Christopher N. K. Mooers
cmooers@rsmas.miami.edu

The 4th American Meteorological Society (AMS) Conference on Coastal Oceanic and Atmospheric Prediction and Processes, will be held 6-9 November 2001. The event is being organized by the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) for Meteorology, Oceanography, and Hydrology of the Coastal Zone (MOHCZ

The goals of the conference are to support the rapid advance of end-to-end coastal atmospheric, oceanic, and hydrologic prediction systems based on a solid scientific foundation. The conference organizers hope that the conference will:

  • Facilitate the exchange of scientific and technical information between coastal meteorologists, oceanographers, and hydrologists.
  • Promote the communication and other interactions between researchers, operational forecasters, associated industries, and customer groups concerned with environmental prediction in the coastal zone.
  • Stimulate the development of a strong scientific community and public constituency concerned with vastly improved coastal environmental information services.
  • Foster the identification of the major feedbacks between the coastal atmosphere, ocean, and landmass to identify the opportunities for, and limits to, improved prediction.
  • Serve as a nexus between other STAC committees, and between other scientific, engineering, and professional societies, with common interests.

Because of our focus on environmental prediction, and the processes that underlie such predictive capability, MOHCZ has a strong corollary interest in real-time observing systems and the broad distribution of observational and model products. Hence, we will hold a special interactive symposium/workshop on Tuesday, 6 November on the topic of real-time, two-way data exchange between research and operational communities; this topic has become a special long-term project for MOHCZ. Participation by ERF scientists will be warmly welcomed.
The Program Committee for next year's conference is cochaired by Frank Aikman, National Ocean Service/NOAA (Frank.Aikman@noaa.gov) and Richard Hodur, Naval Research Laboratory (NRL-Monterey) (hodur@nrlmry.navy.mil).
