DIACES: A New Symposium for Recent Ph.D.s
Monday, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., Snowy Egret
All Ph.D. students who will graduate soon and all recent Ph.D. recipients are invited to a reception hosted by Susan Weiler, director of the DIACES program. ERF is sponsoring a new symposium for recent Ph.D.s engaged in issues at the land-water interface. The Dissertations Symposium for the Advancement of Coastal, Estuarine and Great Lakes Science (DIACES) will bring together up to 40 recent graduates from around the world to foster early career development, interdisciplinary understanding and collegial networking.

Funded by NOAA's Coastal Oceans Program, this capstone experience will promote understanding of coastal and estuarine environments, including human impacts, and foster sound policy and management practices as well as research. The symposium is planned for October, 2002 in Puerto Rico.

All recent grads are encouraged to register their Ph.D. dissertations with the on-line directory. In addition to being a wonderful form of individual recognition, the registry provides a concise overview of emerging research from around the world. Once registered, graduates will receive symposium updates, job announcements, and other information of interest for career development. [For more information, go to http://aslo.org/phd.html]

Student Pizza and Career Social
Monday, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., Horizons West
The Federation will provide a free pizza dinner for students and special guests immediately after the poster social. This is a great chance to make professional connections with senior scientists that lead to subsequent discussions and networking throughout the meeting.

Women's Aquatic Network Luncheon
Tuesday, 12:00 p.m., Garden Courtyard
As in past years, the luncheon program will examine the careers and career paths of notable women scientists. This year's focus will be on non-academic career alternatives, and will feature two speakers: Holly Greening of the Tampa Bay National Estuary Program and Beverly Birkitt, president of Birkitt Environmental Services, Inc.
Time will be available before and after the formal program for networking and socializing. Students in particular will find the luncheon to be an invaluable opportunity to meet others in the field and to make contacts. The lunch is open by advance registration to all ERF 2001 attendees.

WAN brings together women and men with interests in marine and aquatic affairs and promotes the roles of women in these fields. Membership is open to all who are interested in WAN goals. To learn more, go to WAN's web site at www.womensaquatic.net.
