The fall NEERS meeting on Block Island was another memorable one. Over 100 people braved the autumnal waters of Rhode Island Sound for the 12 mile ferry ride to spend October 21-23 with their colleagues, listen to the latest in New England estuarine research, and explore this small island gem. Strong north winds that picked up during the meeting kept participants well focused on the conference by making it difficult even to push open the doors of the hotel to get outside.

The Atlantic Canada Coastal Estuarine Science Society has the distinction of being one of the newest affiliate societies as well as the first affiliate that is not principally based in the United States. The majority of the society's members live and work in eastern Canada where they study estuaries in the Atlantic Canadian coastal areas. The current President is Mark Hanson; the new vice president is Dr. Simon Courtenay, Research Scientist, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Gulf Fisheries Centre, Moncton, NB, courtenays@mar.dfo-mpo.gc.ca. As most of you are aware, Hurricane Ivan wreaked incredible havoc on Pensacola just two weeks before our joint meeting with Society of Wetland Scientists South Central and South Atlantic Chapters was set to begin there. With each succeeding report from the local organizers, rescheduling receded further and further, until finally, late in November, a firm new date was set and a new venue found.
